This Best Burger Sauce Recipe is one of them. There’s a big story behind it…
Penguin Drive In - Carson City, Nevada
When I was 15, I talked my way into a job at a little mom and pop ice cream and fast food shack called The Penguin. It was one of those places where you stop when you’re driving through a small town on a long road trip, flashing frostie sign luring you in. It was also a place that was very popular with the locals. The malts, dipped cones, and finger-sized French fries were among the favorite menu items. But the burgers were what kept people coming back.

The Penguin Burger was by far the best burger the town of Carson City, Nevada has ever seen. I grilled up my share of Penguin Burgers working there as a young high school student, and I topped them all with a secret, special sauce that made them so delicious.
Best Burger Sauce Recipe - from RecipeGirl.com
The Penguin was torn down several years ago to make room for a gas station conglomerate, but my Penguin Burgers’ special sauce recipe is a nod to what those burgers were all about. The full recipe for Penguin Burgers is in my cookbook, but I’m sharing the special sauce with you today so you can add it to your own burgers!

This Is What Happens When You Eat Celery For A Week – I Had No Idea!

Celery is one of those foods, you either love it or you hate it (i hate it) – a bit like Marmite really.
To me, it’s just a long, green, horrible tasting vegetable that’s always on the dinner table at every buffet you go to, next to the hummus and carrot sticks. Who in their right mind would rather eat a celery stick with hummus than a nice bread stick or cracker?
Also what’s up with the stringy strands that run through it? I find that unless you bite it directly across you end up with a long strand of rank hanging out of your mouth (or stuck between your teeth). Yep, I really don’t like celery and I don’t think I’m alone.
Maybe it’s time for me to rethink the crunchy, green sticks though – they are claimed to have endless health benefits. Honestly, celery is not all bad and you’ll be very surprised when I tell you the health benefits of celery.
Finding out the health benefits of a food seems pretty popular right now.
From healthy fruits such as blueberries and acai berries to oily fish containing the all-important omega 3, living in the 21st Century means you are exposed to the hidden benefits of foods unlike any previous generation.
Seriously, I think of my grandparents and wonder whether they have any idea about what’s in their food and the modern ‘superfoods’ that we all red about so often.
I think that it really is exciting to be living in a time when the nutritional information about our food is available to us at the click of a button. It let’s us make really informed choices about what to eat (and what to avoid).
So, seeing as everyone seems to be on a health kick at the moment, you might be interested to hear that celery is one of nature’s superfoods.
It’s absolutely packed full of goodness and can help your health in so may ways.
So why not give celery a try again if you’re one of those people who’s always said you hate celery, this article might just change your mind…
First of all, did you know that celery makes your eyes brighter, tighter and more youthful looking?
The reason why comes down to one of the lesser known and spoken about vitamins – Vitamin A.
Vitamin A:
Celery is absolutely FULL of Vitamin A and just one stick of celery will provide you with 10% of your daily need for Vitamin A. So imagine how much you’d get from munching on a few sticks?
You get about 5 sticks in a packet from the supermarket (and it’s not too expensive), so it’s a really sensible and easy way to top up on this tip top vitamin.
The link between vitamin A and the eyes is as follows: vitamin A protects your eyes and prevents age-related degeneration of vision. That’s right it literally stops your eyes from ageing.
Eating celery every day will give you whiter, brighter eyes and could even accelerate your vision, wow – if that’s not a reason to eat celery I don’t know what is!
Treats bad cholesterol:
The taste and aroma of celery are due to an ingredient known as butylphthalide which reduces LDL, bad cholesterol – which leads to high blood pressure so if you eat just 2 sticks a day, it can reduce your LDL up to 7%.
Helps digestion through an increase in fibre:
Celery is the perfect diuretic. It’s full of water and insoluble fibre and it will make you go to the toilet on a regular basis, so if you suffer from any bowel issues, celery is the perfect food to be eating to regulate your stools.
The high fibre content of celery ensures easy passing of stools. Fibre is needed to soften your stools and make them pass through your system with ease. If you suffer from constipation and struggle to go, celery may be just the thing you need to soften you up and make you more comfortable.
It’s amazing how much fibre celery actually contains. In the average stick on celery you will fin 1.6 grams of dietary fibre. Recommendations suggest 25g of fibre a day, meaning 5 sticks of the green stuff and you’re well on your way to meeting your daily intake.
Supports your eye health:
A lot of us have to wear glasses all day every day so you don’t want your eye sight getting any worse, do you!
A celery stick provides you with 10% of your daily Vitamin A which protects your vision. It’s also full of polyphenol and phytonutrients which keeps your vision at 20/20.
Helps you lose weight:
A stick of celery is only 10 calories and it’s full of water, so eating celery will, in fact, make you lose weight, not put it on. The water in the celery will keep you feeling fuller for longer which will stop you snacking or binging out.
Of course, if you’re dieting celery is a great snack but shouldn’t be your only go too. Adding some hummus to the snack is a good way to help fill you up whilst still eating healthily.
Alleviates and relieves inflammation:
It successfully relieves inflammation and relieves joint pain as it’s rich in antioxidants and polyphenols.
It’s also great for asthma sufferers and treats acne because it contains salicylic acid which removes follicular clog.
A lot of athletes eat celery to give them energy and it helps with water retention.
Reduces stress:
Celery is rich in magnesium and is known to reduce stress. A magnesium deficiency can cause stress and so by eating celery you are likely to feel more relaxed, who knew!?
It’s also high in essential oils as well so the vegetable will soothe the nervous system and will help you fall asleep easily.
So if you’re having a bad day, munch on a few sticks of celery & it’ll de-stress you and you can look forward to a comfortable night’s sleep.
It’s also important to have regular pH levels in order to avoid acidic build up. Anyone suffering from acid reflux or similar problems should eat celery on a daily basis as it can be neutralising.
It improves your sex life:
If you weren’t convinced about eating celery up to now you will be after hearing this!
The Maury Show GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY
Celery is high in two sex pheromones, androstenone and androstenol which are released while chewing. I used to take celery to work as a snack but I always used to find the loud crunch of it embarrassing. Not anymore, from now on I will crunch my celery with pride knowing just how sexy I’m becoming!
The increase of hormones will significantly boost your arousal levels. So if you’re feeling sluggish, munch on a stick of celery, it will improve your sex life.
Your partner can thank us later.
Fights cancer:
Celery has a flavonoid called Luteolin which delays the formation of breast cancer cells and inhibits the growth of cancer cells, especially in the case of the pancreas and colorectal cancer.
Celery is a proven food to delay the risk of cancer so make sure you always have it in your fridge.
The darker the colour of celery, the stronger the taste will be, so if you’re buying celery for the health factors and not the taste, then make sure you’re buying a light one.
If you’re cooking with celery rather than eating it raw, you’re best off steaming it. This way you will manage to preserve its taste as well as 99% of the nutrients – this is really important. Boiling celery (or any vegetable) significantly reduces the number of available nutrients in the food so your first option for maximum nutrition should be raw after that steamed.
The nutrients also stay better preserved when you chop it up while fresh and store it in the fridge. Plus, if you do this for. big batch, they’re ready to grab whenever you need a quick snack and are tempted by something less healthy.
These aren’t the only health benefits…
We could go on all day about the benefits for celery because they are just endless. Some of the other benefits not yet mentioned are summarised for you below.
Celery can de-bloat you, so if you suffer from IBS or wind a stick of celery after a meal may be a helping hand to settling your tummy ache.
It can reduce your blood pressure.
Celery acts a detox to your whole body – is there anything this wonder food cannot do?!
Oh, and it’s seriously low in calories (which is always a plus, isn’t it!)
So there you have it, one of nature’s undisputed superfoods and readily available (for not that much) at your local supermarket. Go and grab yourself a pack and feel pleased at how healthy you’re being, your body will thank you!
Don’t forget to share this with your family and friends! And let us know what you think in the comments.
